On its surface, The Wolf House is a dark fairy tale inspired by classics of the genre like Little Red Riding Hood and Hansel and Gretel. It tells the story of Maria, a young girl who is punished by her community for disobedience and sentenced to 'spend a hundred days and a hundred nights without talking to anyone.' Maria flees the community and, being followed by a wolf, finds refuge in an abandoned cabin in the woods. This rather generic narrative structure is a mere vehicle for the uncanny and horrific. As viewers, we feel the horror seeping through the platitudes of a fairy tale; it is hints, omissions, and silences that make the whole story so unsettling and uneasy. Directors Cristóbal León and Joaquín Cociña create a truly unique and majestic visual style by pushing the boundaries of stop-motion animation, combining two- and three-dimensional spaces, painting, and crafts.
