“I have allowed myself to lead this little life, when inside me there was so much more. And it's all gone unused. And now it never will be.”

Nor:

Eng:

We begin with a woman talking to herself, talking to the camera, talking to the Wall. Is she mad? No, she is Shirley Valentine. A rather extraordinary woman leading a particularly unextraordinary life.

We find Shirley suddenly faced with a dilemma; that her once loving husband, Joe - now devolved into the oaf referred to as Him - will not be dining on his expected ‘steak n’ chips’, but rather will have to receive a measly ‘egg n’ chips’. The fierce melodrama of her unremarkable life leads Shirley down memory lane - reflecting on how she reached this point in her life. Where did her life go? When exactly did she give up on the idea of herself? Her dreams?

Unappreciated by her children, stranger to the man she onced loved, and largely isolated due to her domestic duties, this is not the life she wants. However, once propositioned by her newly divorced friend, Jane, for a two week holiday to Mykonos, Greece, Shirley’s dreams of self rediscovery may finally come true.

This wickedly dry, heartfelt, bittersweet monodrama was a sensation, not only commercially for a UK film, but culturally. The film led to the definition of ‘Shirley Valentine Syndrome’ where numbers of middle aged women felt compelled to stop talking to the Wall and leave it all behind to finally free themselves.
