We proudly present Katha, the third feature we're screening this year from the incredibly talented yet criminally unknown director and screenwriter Sai Parānjpye.
The film plays out mostly in a chawl, a west-Indian style of communal residential complex. Within this little community we meet Rajaram P. Joshi, whose benevolent nature knows no bounds, always eager to lend a helping hand. He harbors a secret affection for his neighbor Sandhya, waiting for the right moment to make his move. But the typical life in the chawl takes an unexpected turn with the arrival of Basu, an old friend of Rajaram. Basu is a smooth-talking, charismatic and opportunistic individual that has made a living conning people, especially of the opposite sex.
The screenplay, written after the release of the hugely successful Chashme Buddoor, is a cleverly reimagined version of the tale of the hare and the tortoise, based loosely on a play by S. G. Sathye.
