It is perhaps impossible to name a more influential cyberpunk film than Ghost in the Shell. Not only did it stylistically influence the later generation of dystopian sci-fi like The Matrix, it also set in stone the corpus of philosophical and societal issues that are now staples of the genre: the blurring of the line between humans and AI, the unrelenting grip of technological corporations on day-to-day life, and the ethical status of machines, to name a few. In the film, we follow Motoko Kusanagi, a cyborg leader of a special assault team, who struggles with the mismatch of their external body, ‘the shell’, and their inner self, ‘the ghost’. These themes of body dysmorphia, and ultimately transhumanism, make Ghost in the Shell relevant even today, almost 20 years after its release.
