Since 1980, the Peruvian people have suffered through a civil war between the country’s government and the Shining Path, a Maoist guerrilla terrorist group. Whilst they endured through one of the worst human rights crises, it was the indigenous people of Peru who were particularly targeted, with a focus on their complete eradication.
The Milk of Sorrow explores how trauma becomes instilled through generations, even 30 years after the initial atrocity. The title of the movie refers to the superstition born of the pillaging and assaults of indigenous women by terrorist soldiers. We meet Fausta , who, following her own mother’s death, learns of a sickness she has. A sickness that has been passed down to her through her mother’s breast milk.
This arresting and mesmerising Peruvian film tackles the subjects of generational trauma, ethnic cleansing, and the plight of one frightened and lonely woman dealing with the consequences of violence inflicted on her mother. Fausta must directly face her own past, if she is to heal and absolve her inherited trauma.
