Women Calling the Shots - African Cinema in Spotlight er en to-dagers festival organisert av Bergen Filmklubb. Festivalen er viet til å feire arbeidet til kvinnelige filmskapere med afrikansk opprinnelse.
Festivalprogrammet samler ikoniske verk som Sambizanga (1972) av Sarah Maldoror sammen med nyere filmer. Sammen gir de publikum i Bergen muligheten til å oppleve den politiske og kunstneriske rikdommen i afrikansk film – noe som fortsatt altfor ofte er underrepresentert i vestlige filmprogrammer.
Programmet inkluderer Sambizanga (1972) av Sarah Maldoror, en pioner innen afrikansk og diasporafilm. Også på programmet er Atlantics (2019) av Mati Diop og I Am Not a Witch (2017) av Rungano Nyoni. I tillegg vil festivalen presentere et kortfilmprogram av Jyoti Mistry, med filmer som We Remember Differently (2005), When I Grow Up I Want to Be a Black Man (2017) og Loving in Between (2023).
I tillegg til visninger legger festivalen vekt på kollektiv diskusjon og samvær. Bergen Filmklubb har invitert den Bergen-baserte kunstneren Amber Ablett, som vil lede en filmklubbdiskusjon i forbindelse med Atlantics (2019), og trekke på sin erfaring med interseksjonelle filmklubbpraksiser for å utforske havets tematiske og symbolske rolle.
Åpningen av festivalen vil ha en paneldiskusjon, med podkaster og advokat Ashura Kayupayupa og leder av The Female Minority Voices Book Club, Anine Fatou Bråten. Deres samtale vil ta for seg temaer som myte, motstand, vold og makt, kvinnelige afrikanske filmskapere og representasjonens politikk.
Festivalen er muliggjort takket være generøs støtte fra Kulturdirektoratet. Støtten er gitt i forbindelse med initiativet som markerer FNs internasjonale tiår for personer av afrikansk avstamning, og understreker viktigheten av å skape plattformer som setter afrikanske og diasporiske stemmer, historier og kulturell produksjon i sentrum.
Ved å samle filmer, filmskapere og kritiske stemmer, har Women Calling the Shots som mål å skape et rom for dialog – med fokus på bidragene fra afrikanske kvinnelige filmskapere og viktigheten av historiene de forteller.

Women Calling the Shots - African Cinema in Spotlight is a two-day festival organized by Bergen Filmklubb. The festival is dedicated to celebrating the work of women filmmakers of African origin.
The festival programme brings together landmark works such as Sambizanga (1972) by Sarah Maldoror alongside more recent films. Together, they offer audiences in Bergen a chance to experience the political and artistic richness of African cinema - something that is still too often underrepresented in Western cinema programmes.
The lineup includes Sambizanga (1972) by Sarah Maldoror, a pioneering figure of African and diasporic cinema. Also featured is Atlantics (2019) by Mati Diop and I Am Not a Witch (2017) by Rungano Nyoni. Alongside these films, the festival will present a short film programme by Jyoti Mistry. The programme will include We Remember Differently (2005), When I Grow Up I Want to Be a Black Man (2017), and Loving in Between (2023.)
In addition to screenings, the festival foregrounds collective discussion and coming together. Bergen Filmklubb have invited Bergen based artist Amber Ablett. She will host a film club discussion in connection with Atlantics (2019), drawing on her experience with intersectional film club practices to explore the thematic and symbolic role of the sea.
The opening of the festival will feature a panel discussion, bringing together podcaster and lawyer Ashura Kayupayupa and leader of The Female Minority Voices Book Club, Anine Fatou Bråten. Their conversation will engage with themes of myth, resistance, violence and power, African women filmmakers and the politics of representation.
The festival is made possible with the generous support of Kulturdirektoratet. This support has been granted in connection with the initiative marking the United Nations’ International Decade for People of African Descent, underscoring the importance of creating platforms that centre African and diasporic voices, histories, and cultural production.
By bringing together films, filmmakers, and critical voices, Women Calling the Shots aims to create a space for dialogue - highlighting contributions of African women filmmakers and the urgency of the stories they tell.
