Få grøssere har hatt så stor innflytelse på skrekksjangeren som Hideo Nakatas Ring. Den berømte scenen hvor den langhårede og hvitkledde Sadako kryper gjennom TV-skjermen har vært gjenspeilet i hundrevis av kopier, imitasjoner, og parodier i ettertid. Der etterkommerne gikk for enkle jumpscares og lettglemte historier, ble Rings tematikk rundt oppvekst, sympati for monsteret, og separasjons-trauma mer eller mindre glemt i bunnen av brønnen.
Ring er også merkbar for dens praktiske effekter og måten den bruker moderne teknologi som et skrekk-element, noe som imponerer selv 25 år senere og kan sees i moderne grøssere som We’re All Going to the World’s Fair (2021). Du vil kanskje ikke sitte for tett på lerretet under denne visningen…

Few horror films have been as influential as Hideo Nakata's Ring. The silhouette of the long-haired Sadako, and the infamous scene in which she crawls out the TV, has ingrained itself on the public consciousness of horror cinema.
In addition to its influence, Ring is notable for being one of the first horror films to utilize modern technology as an element of fear, paving the way for contemporary tech-horrors such as We’re All Going to the World's Fair (2021). On the other hand, many of the film’s later imitators failed to capture Ring’s essential creeping uneasiness, psychological themes, and sympathy for the monster, instead relying on cheap scares and CGI when Ring almost exclusively relied on impressive practical effects

Under Halloween i 1992 sendte BBC1 en spesialsending hvor deres reportere besøker «Englands mest hjemsøkte hus». Det de tror vil bli et litt tullete innslag om en spøkelsesjakt, blir raskt noe mye mørkere.
Når Ghostwatch først ble sendt på TV var ikke seerne klar over at dette var fiksjon. Dette resulterte i et hysteri, tusenvis av klager, og at episoden ble bannlyst fra BBC i 30 år. Ghostwatch var aldri ment til å skape et massehysteri, men kombinasjonen av kjente TV-ansikt, klippingen mellom “live” studio og intervjuene med det hjemsøkte husets beboere gjorde at seerne ble så skremt at en dame til og med sendte brev til BBC for kompensasjon for å kjøpe nye bukser til ektemannen.

Halloween night 1992, the BBC1 crew goes live with a special program where a camera crew investigates “the most haunted house in Britain” during a broadcast with a live studio audience. What they think will be a silly attempt at an investigation of the paranormal, quickly turns into something much more sinister.
When Ghostwatch first aired, viewers were completely unaware that it was fake. This resulted in hysteria, thousands of complaints, and the episode being banned from the BBC for 30 years. Ghostwatch was never meant to create a mass hysteria, but the combination of familiar TV-faces, the cutting between the “live” studio and interviews with residents scared the viewers so much that a lady even sent a letter to the BBC asking for compensation for new pants for her husband.
