Andrei Tarkovsky’s Stalker (1979) is a loose adaptation of Strugarsky brothers’ novel Roadside Picnic, published in 1972, a work shaped by the harsh political conditions it was written under. Strugatsky brothers often resorted to fiction to explore social or political questions that could not always be addressed directly. The novel therefore reflects a strong criticism of bureaucracy and ideological conformity, and the belief that institutions could control human progress.

The film, however, differs significantly from the novel. While both works focus on the mysterious Zone and the people who risk everything to enter it, the Strugatsky’s Zone is presented as an aftermath of an extraterrestrial visit and its consequences, critiquing the authoritarian institutions and people’s tendency to exploit the unknown for a selfish gain. Tarkovsky’s Zone is more of a spiritual space, replacing the novel’s focus on natural scientific curiosity with a deeper philosophical exploration, focusing less on the science-fiction aspect of the original and more on the questions of faith and desire. Tarkovsky’s famous slow pacing and atmospheric cinematography make the film feel almost dream-like. The long and slow camera movement makes this journey feel hypnotic, forcing us to sit with the characters’ uncertainty and exhaustion. Just like the Strugatsky’s Zone, the Tarkovsky’s Zone is something humans desperately try to understand, but the longer we look, the less certain it becomes. The result is a film in which politics, philosophy and cinematography all contribute to the same idea - there are parts of human existence that simply cannot be controlled or explained.
