Milonga introduces us to Rosa, a woman who is learning to live again after the passing away of her husband and the imprisonment of her son. Laura González is very capable at hiding Rosa’s past, and leaves us no choice but to assemble the pieces of the puzzle only as she makes them available. It soon becomes clear that Rosa was trapped in an abusive relationship she was not capable of leaving. We don’t often get to hear the voice of the women who stayed, nor of the children who had to bear witness.
Paulina García delivers an amazing performance as Rosa, and portrays a victim written exactly as victims many times are, with all their virtues and flaws, with their successes and their mistakes, and forced to exist alongside the consequences of their decisions.
25 November is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. This date commemorates the murder in 1960 of sisters Patria, Minerva and María Teresa Mirabal, who opposed the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo in the Dominican Republic. Violence against women is a structural problem worldwide, and Norway is no exception. Ni una menos.
