Alice Rohrwacher sitt mesterverk, Happy as Lazzaro, er en fortelling om motsetninger. Den naive og betingelsesløst snille bonden Lazzaro, som jobber på landet for 'Sigarett-dronningen', blir venn med dronningens listige arving, Tancredi. De iscenesetter Tancredis kidnapping i et forsøk på å få dronningen til å betale en saftig løsesum. Historien utspiller seg mot bakteppet av bøndenes langsomme liv innenfor det føydale systemet, der til og med tiden har stoppet opp i monotoniens hverdag.

Alice Rohrwacher’s magical realist Happy as Lazzaro is a tale of mirror opposites. The naive and unconditionally kind farmer Lazzaro, working on land for the ‘Queen of Cigarettes’, is juxtaposed to the queen’s cunning heir Tancredi. The latter, being either spiritually or factually Lazzaro’s half-brother, persuades Lazzaro to stage his kidnapping in an attempt to make the queen pay a hefty ransom. This story is played against the backdrop of farmers’ slow life within the feudal system, where even time has stopped in the monotony of the quotidian. Such timelessness of rural Italy is then brutally contrasted with the sobering disenchantment of hectic urban Italy: feudal personalistic oppression becomes modern capitalistic impersonal oppression. The flow of time violently strikes back as our protagonists make their way to the city, thus leaving forever the neverending youth of bucolic life.
