Vi følger opp fjorårets visning av Harakiri med Samurai Rebellion. Det er fem år mellom filmene, men de deler både visuelt uttrykk og tematikk. Å trosse tradisjoner og autoritet er sentrale tema. Eller som Kobayasi selv oppsummerte den gjennomgående tematikken i alle hans filmer: “Individet mot samfunnet”.
Men det er andre likheter til hans tidligere film også, som lydsporet, der Toru Takemitsu er komponist for begge produksjonene. Og for ikke å nevne Tatsuya Nakadai, helten fra Harakiri, gjør denne gang en mindre rolle som den gode vennen til protagonisten Isaburo Sasahara, spillt av den legendariske Toshiro Mifune.
Isaburo er en dyktig samurai og lederen av Aizuklanen sin høyre hånd. Han lever et rolig liv med familien sin i fredstid, men som tittelen røper er det duket for en ny tid i Aizuklanen.

As a follow-up to our screening of Harakiri last autumn, released 5 years later, Samurai Rebellion is visually and thematically similar, with defiance against tradition and authority (here in a feudal form) being the central topic. Or as Kobayashi himself once summarized the recurring theme of all his films: "the individual against society". The interest in such themes might stem from his personal experiences during the second world war, when he demonstrated acts of insubordination while serving in Manchuria.
But there are other similarities to his previous film too, like the score, Toru Takemitsu being the composer for both productions. And not to mention Tatsuya Nakadai, the hero of the first film, this time making a smaller appearance as the close friend of protagonist Isaburo Sasahara (portrayed by the legendary Toshiro Mifune).
Isaburo is a skilled swordsman, master of the armory and vassal to the lord of the Aizu clan, married and with two sons, he is now living a dull life while the domain is at peace. But the Sasahara family's fate soon take an abrupt turn when the lord's concubine Lady Ichi (Yoko Tsukasa), after a dramatic revolt of her own, is dismissed from the castle and sent to marry Isaburo's firstborn son Yogoro (Go Kato).
And so the stage is set for a series of decisive events leading to the climatic (as spoiled by the title) rebellion.
